THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Offering a delightful feast for bibliophiles in the capital city, the book exhibition of the State Institute of Languages rolled out its carpet at the VJT Hall here.    Thousands of books under various titles published by the Institute have been lined up inside the hall to satiate the hunger of book lovers. From the ‘Dakshina Bharatha Charithram’ written by K A Neelakanta Sasthri published in 1975 to the ‘Knowledge book series,’ a biographic series on great men published in 2011, choices are aplenty for readers to plunge into the treasure trove of knowledge. Spread across natural sciences, physical science, engineering, language, literature and arts and social sciences, a rich stock of books is available on a variety of subjects. Amid a plethora of impressions in Malayalam, ‘Progress of Travancore under H H Sri Moolam Tirunal’ written by Ulloor S Parameswara Iyer,  T A Gopinatha Rao’s ‘Travancore Archaeological Series’ - a seven volume set, ‘Tourism: Employment and Labour Market Issues’ by B Vijayakumar and K R Pillai in English stand apart from the fold. The complete works of B R Ambedkar and the interpretation of complete works of Sree Narayana Guru are among the titles on display. There is also a set of books for self-tutorial intended to make one self-equipped on various skills. Books on stitching, electrical trade theory and plumbing are written in such a manner that an inexperienced newbie can easily master the skills through thorough perusal and study. The trilingual glossary series is available in physics, law, politics, botany, zoology, journalism, animal husbandry, chemistry, philosophy and history, where meanings of words are made available in English, Malayalam and Hindi. ‘Sree Padmanabha Swami Kshethram’, the work by Aswathy Thirunal Gowri Lakshmi Bayi translated by K Sankaran Namboothiri and K Jayakumar, is expected to hit an upward spiral in sales against the backdrop of the discovery of the gargantuan treasure in the subterranean vaults of the temple.  The organisers say that the book had gone out of stock in the last exhibition conducted a few months ago.The book contains 16 sections which cover the history, milestones, traditions and miracles in connection with the ancient temple.  Translation of ‘The Wonder that was India’ penned by A L Basham, an outstanding study on various civilisations in India, is also expected to be sold like hot cakes. The venue has received a remarkable number of visitors in just two days’ time. According to Krishna Das, an octogenarian who is a regular visitor to the book fairs of the Institute, “this exhibition provides a sumptuous treat for language lovers and hence it will benefit a lot many enthusiasts of Malayalam.”  He was making a list out of the favourites found there to match up the budget to buy. The younger generation too is not behind when it comes to the habit of book reading. Shyni V S, a postgraduate student of English Literature at University College, has come to pick a few from literature, “I am here for Basheer’s novels. His language is simple and digestible as well,” she adds. The ten-day book fair is on till December 10. Timing is from 10 am to 8.30 pm.
