MALAPPURAM: Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal dedicated the Malappuram off-campus of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to the nation at a function held in Perinthalmanna on Saturday.“The education sector of our country has to grow more when compared to that of developed countries in the world. We have to change the situation and the 12th Five Year Plan will have its focus on the development of health and education sectors,” said Sibal. More than 70 per cent of the students in countriesincluding the United States join universities for higher education, but in our country, the rate is below 50 percent, he added.Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who presided over the function, praised the efforts by the previous LDF government to set up the centre. “When the UDF took over, we also did our bit and finally it has become a reality,” said Chandy.“The state government extends all support for the smooth functioning of the AMU centre,” he added.Kapil Sibal also laid the foundation stone for the new campus of the centre on the occasion. Union Minister of State for HRD E Ahamed laid the stone for the administrative building of the centre.The Aligarh Muslim University special centre here is one of the five such centres being set up in the country. The classes for the first batch of MBA and LLB students have already commenced in a temporary building near the new campus.Five hostels for men and three hostels for women would come up soon. The Central Government has sanctioned `200 crore for the centre. The to-be-set-up campus will comprise facilities from a pre-school to a full-fledged Medical College.The state government will spend `100 crore for the development of the campus.Ministers Aryadan Mohammed, P K Kunhalikutty, A P Anilkumar, P K Abdu Rabb, MPs M I Shanavas and E T Mohammed Basheer, District Panchayat President Suhara Mampad and Manhalamkuzhi Ali MLA attended the function.
