BANGALORE: Inaugurating the plantation drive organised at Jade Garden, Sadahalli, Bangalore, Ramachandra Gowda, deputy chairman, Karnataka State Planning Commission said that planting trees is no more restricted to just a pleasant visual appeal, it is now a necessary tool for survival. Jade Garden Plot Owners Association (JGPOA), Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) and Indian Development Foundation (IDF) came together to plant tree saplings. Pleased with the initiative, Gowda emphasised the importance of such drives and asserted that more should come forward and replicate the deed.Talking on the occasion, Dr S Franklin, manager, southern region of Indian development foundation said that the drive was not just restricted to the city, but, was a pan India program jointly organised by the organisations involved in the drive. According to him the program aimed at impressing upon the urban elites towards creating greener cities across the country. Apart from sponsoring the event, employees of the associations were also involved in the process. The land space for the same was provided by JGPOA. A G Prakash, principal, Sri Ayappan High School, Jayamahal, lamented the gradual depletion of forests in India. Attributing the scenario to ignorance, he called for planting more number of trees towards good heath and well being of people. Apart from involving associations and organisations, the event also saw youth take active part in the programme. Neha, a student of CMR Information Technology, Kundenahalli, also spoke of the importance of trees and plants. Twelve-year-old, and Student Social Ambassador of Indian Development Foundation, Karan Dravid, administered the oath towards protecting nature.There have been many such tree drives both by residential associations in collaborations with multinational companies and the Palike. The question that arises is after the saplings are planted who will be responsible taking care of these plants.
