Residents of J&K spent a sleepless night as a series of moderate intensity aftershocks struck the region.

New Delhi: Four aftershocks jolted quake-ravaged Jammu and Kashmir early Wednesday morning, triggering panic among the survivors of the October 8 earthquake.

While the first aftershock, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, occurred at 0002 hours IST (0730 hours GMT), another tremor of the same intensity shook the region at 0250 hours (0820 hours GMT) Met Department officials said.

A third reverberation, 5.3 on the Richter scale struck at 0803 hours IST (1333 hours GMT) while a fourth, of 5.4 magnitude, occurred at 0846 hours IST (1416 hours GMT).

Terrified people rushed out of their houses as some buildings developed cracks and debris from the houses fell onto the streets.

However there were no reports of death and injuries.

J&K has experienced about 50 aftershocks so far, since the October 8 quake wreaked death and destruction in the area.

The epicentre of the tremors lay in the northern parts of Pakistan near its border with POK.
