The Third Advanced Vaccinology Course in India (INDVAC2012), organised by the Department of Community Health, Christian Medical College, was inaugurated by Dr Sunil Chandy, director-designate of the CMC Hospital, here on Monday. The 10-day Course intended to provide its participants with a comprehensive view of vaccinology, immunology, the process of developing vaccines and introducing new vaccines into a community, licensing and regulatory mechanisms, translating research into policy and issues of economics and ethics.
Course Director Dr Anuradha Bose, Professor of Paediatrics in the Department of Community Health, said, “INDVAC is modelled on the Advanced Vaccinology Course held annually in Annecy (France), a coveted course but expensive, which has limited places for participants from developing countries. We wanted to organise a course of similar standards accessible to participants especially from India and the SAARC region.”
Every year, 50 candidates were admitted to the course. The resounding success of the first two years had been carried forward this year as well. This year, 49 candidates, including 23 sponsored by the Clinical Development Service Agency (CDSA), Translational Health Science and Technology Institute of the Union Department of Biotechnology (DBT), were participating. Through the training of these candidates, the DBT hoped to build up a core group of trained researchers and clinical trialists.
The sponsored participants, who were selected from across the country were not just doctors but clinical trialists, and researchers associated with infectious diseases, child health and Immunisation programmes. Apart from it, INDVAC had participants from countries like Bangladesh, Norway and Tanzania.
