BANGALORE: Mayor Shardamma along with Home Minister R Ashok, MLA B N Vijaykumar inaugurated an organic waste converter Plant at Pattabhirama Nagar Ward recently. It was a combined initiative taken by MLA B N Vijaykumar and BBMP.  Said Vijaykumar, “I have been thinking of this idea for three years now. After travelling to different parts of India and abroad where this technology was extensively used, I decided to bring it to my own constituency. We have been running this project on trail for two months, today we are officially inaugurating it.”The Home minister, R Ashok said, “I am very happy with the initiative.  Malleswaram already has a solid waste management centre which has been of great help. We can eradicate the whole garbage mafia going on in the city through the use of such advanced technology. I am planning to extend this solid waste management programme to 15 more constituencies.” Mayor Shardamma congratulated the members associated with the project on the inauguration. On the budget of the project, Superintendent Engineer, Bette Gowda, said, “The whole project cost around 40 lakhs. One tonne waste can give an output of 250 kg. As of now, it is only the market waste from Jayanagar 4th block that’s coming in. Since the inauguration, hotels like Maiya’s and Adigas have started sending waste already. The Adarsh apartments, Ashok apartments and LIC colony will be sending household waste from tomorrow.” He further added that an additional five lakhs will be sanctioned to construct a dry waste collection centre which will segregate wet and dry waste. We will also buy a bone crusher so that we can make use of non-veg waste too. Gowda also said, “There is no cost except transportation and employees — which will be marginalised with revenue collected by selling the output. The wet waste will be sold in the market as manure and dry waste can be put to use to manufacture plastic and other materials. We have distributed two buckets, one for dry waste, other for wet waste, to volunteers which will be brought to this centre everyday without fail. “The Joint Commissioner, Hemchandra for South Zone, of BBMP wants to ensure that Pattabhirama Nagar Ward becomes a zero garbage zone.” We have planned for ten such centres, one has been completed, nine are left. We will be floating tenders for the other nine from the next month,” he added. When City Express interacted with the audience in the crowd, reactions were positive. Geeta Kumari, a resident of Jayanagar 3rd block, said, “I was not aware of this technology, it feels good to think that nothing will be wasted.”Corporator of Pattabhirama Nagar Ward, C K Ramamurthy said that through this plant he aims at eliminating the garbage menace as much as possible in his ward.
