A key accused person was arrested, and another surrendered before the First Class Judicial Magistrate Court on Wednesday in connection with the Edappally spirit smuggling case.
The accused Ramakrishnan, a native of Edappally who is a mafia agent, was arrested by Excise officials.
While Baiju, a native of Ezhukone in Kollam and who drove the lorry from which the spirit was seized, surrendered before the Aluva Judicial Magistrate.
According to Excise officials, Ramakrishnan was arrested from his house in Edappally. Both were remanded in Excise Department custody.
The Excise officials said that they have arrested six key accused persons in the case. The key accused Ajith, who smuggled the spirit from Coimbatore and Bengaluru was arrested by the Excise officials two weeks ago.
Ajith was taken for evidence gathering at various places in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
About 1,728 litres of spirit stored in 54 cans were hidden inside a secret cabin of the lorry. The Excise Department seized the spirit while the vehicle was parked at a petrol bunk in Edappally in June this year.
The Excise officials are also trying to track down two persons in Bengaluru who made the secret cabins.
