In fact, it is dull this year compared with previous years,” rues Mukkaiya, secretary, Chennai, Koyambedu Flower Wholesale Merchants Association.Mukkaiya points out that the prime reason for low flower sales is because of the fact that the market is too far away for people to come and purchase the flowers in bulk quantities. “So most of them buy small quantities of flowers locally,” he observed. Another major reason, is that people prefer to purchase the flowers from Parrys and not Koyambedu.Jasmine and its variants, Star Rose, Queen Rose, Tube Rose, Chamanthi, Vadamalli are some of the flower varieties that people prefer to buy during the season of Onam for the pookolam. Jasmine is currently selling for `150 per kg and chances are that it might increase to `200 tomorrow. With Star Rose selling for `60 now, vendors predict that it might go up to `80.
