Water was released for Cauvery delta irrigation after a delay of 96 days, with the ceremonial opening of the Stanley reservoir.
The upper level sluices were lifted at 12.10 pm and the occasion was marked by spraying of petals in the gushing waters by Minister for PWD K V Ramalingam, Minister for Industries P Thangamani, Highways Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy, Salem MP S Semmalai, five AIADMK MLAs, M K Selvaraj, Collector K Maharabushanam, PWD Water Resources Wing Chief Engineer Ganesan Marachan, Upper Cauvery Basin Superintending Engineer Sivanandhan, Excutive Engineer Kandhasamy and many others. Ramalingam said that water was being released on the orders of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa following requests from delta farmers to supply water for the samba paddy season.
The water released from the Mettur dam is expected to irrigate about 0.96 lakh hectares in Tiruchy and Karur and 3.74 lakh hectares in the core Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and parts of Pudukottai. As per the CM’s order the irrigation spell will continue till January 28, the customary closing date. To start, 4,000 cusecs was released on Monday and this would be gradually stepped up to 16,000 cusecs. The water would take 48 hours to reach the Kallanai. The parched river bed and high level of sand mining in the Cauvery may impede the flow, said officials.
Asked whether the government was confident of satisfying the needs of farmers in the delta with the available storage at present and about the possibility of getting the backlog supply from Karnataka, Ramalingam said the CM would highlight the problems faced by the State at the CRA meet and ensure adequate supply.
