CHENNAI: In an incident that caused quite a stir at the Nungambakam suburban railway station on Friday, four persons were injured after the concrete flooring on a part of the foot overbridge at the station crashed. The four plunged 20 ft to the ground and sustained fractures to ankles and hands, railway police said. The portion which collapsed was immediately cordoned off. According to eyewitnesses, they rushed to the southern side of the bridge near the Sterling Road subway after they heard a loud sound around 10 am. They then saw that about five concrete slabs on the floor of the bridge had crashed. They also heard the cries of the four — Mohan, Yuvaraj and Murali Rao from Andhra Pradesh and Nazeer from Chennai, who landed on a mound of garbage under the bridge. Following this, several autodrivers, along with a few policemen, rescued the injured and rushed them to a private hospital on Greams Road. Divisional Railway Manager S Anantharaman said that the slabs had crashed as the steel angle supporting it had given way in due to corrosion. He said that the authorities have been asked to repair the bridge immediately and provide an additional steel beam for support. Also, sectional managers have been asked to inspect such bridges under their respective jurisdiction, he said, adding that the four were shifted to the Railway Hospital, Perambur in the afternoon. A case was filed. Mayor Saidai Duraisamy also inspected the bridge.
