Three Indian soldiers were killed and the body of one mutilated in Machhal, Jammu and Kashmir, the army said on Tuesday.
"Retribution will be heavy for this cowardly act," the army said in a statement.
Pakistan army was shelling in the Machhal sector since morning and this act was done under the cover of Pakistan firing, said Indian army.
"Condemn the cowardly killing of our soldiers & mutilation of one of them. Salute these brave martyrs for their sacrifice," said Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.
Sources reveal that Pakistan's Border Action Team is responsible for the barbaric act.
Meanwhile, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry summoned Indian Deputy High Commissioner JP Singh after he lodged strong protest against the mutilation and killing of Indian soldiers in the Macchal sector.
Sources said he also took up the issue of repeated ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces as well as their usage of artillery and 120 mm heavy mortars.
This is the second incident in a month of a soldier being mutilated.
