KOCHI: The 24th convocation of Indira Gandhi National Open University was organised on Monday. The regional convocation in Kochi was organised at IGNOU Regional Centre, Kaloor. Prof Madhusoodana Kurup, Vice-Chancellor, Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies, was the guest of honour. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the university has contributed significantly to the development of higher education in the country through open and distance learning. He exhorted students to utilise the knowledge and skills acquired for the welfare of society and for the empowerment of the disadvantaged. V Venugopal Reddy, Regional Director, IGNOU, in his report said that IGNOU follows a learner-centric approach in designing and implementing academic programmes. The university is offering more than 500 programmes and has a student strength of more than 3.5 million. He said that IGNOU has 55 study centres, 19 partner institutions and 28 community colleges in Kochi with an enrolment of over 25,000 students . It offers academic programmes in diverse disciplines under the diversified delivery system. He also mentioned some initiatives of the regional centre such as offering full-time academic programmes in MBA, MSW and programmes in Aviation, Gandhain Studies and MTech. These courses were launched in association with institutions like CIAL.As many as 1,148 students were eligible to receive degrees and diplomas at the Regional Centre, of which 426 students attended the regional convocation. The degrees and diplomas were conferred on them by Prof V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor, IGNOU. Four students from Cochin Regional Centre — Sini K Nair (Master of Computer Applications), Brindha K (Bachelor of Library and Information Science), Veni Prasad (Master of Business Administration in Aviation Business Management) and Justin Joseph (Post Graduate Diploma in Adult Education) — were awarded gold medals.
