In a ruling on Monday, the Karnataka High Court sent a 16-year-old girl who had eloped with a youth and was pregnant for five months, to her parents. The youth was sent to jail.
Hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Shruthi’s (named changed) parents, a division bench comprising Justice D V Shailendrakumar and Justice B V Pinto observed, “This is a shocking incident,” and handed over the girl to her parents.
Shruthi, a student of a reputed college in the city, befriended Srikanth (name changed), who was working in a hotel, and fell in love with him four years ago. They had eloped many times but returned to their houses following the intervention of their elders. However, they eloped in January this year again but did not come back. Subsequently, the girl’s parents filed a case with Viveknagar police station and also filed a habeas corpus in the High Court.
