New Delhi: The doctor-parents of 15-year-old Dhileepan Raj who allegedly performed a caesarean section at their family-run maternity hospital near Manapparai recently, were taken into custody Monday.
Dr Murugesan and his wife Dr Gandhimathy were detained at the Valanadu police station, police sources said.
The Caesarian was done three-months ago allegedly by Dhileepan who is a class ten student to create a world record. However, Dr Murugesan now denies that he allowed his son perform the C-section operation.
The incident, which created a flutter, came to light at last month's meeting of Tamil Nadu unit of the Indian Medical Association, where Murugesan a gynaecologist, is said to have screened the video of their son performing the surgery.
Coming down heavily on Dr Murugesan, the IMA has adopted a resolution seeking disciplinary action against him.
“Appropriate action would be taken after studying the report and consultations with both medical and legal experts and informal interactions with the investigation team. However, details of the report would not be disclosed to the media or the public and only the decision taken will be made known,” said District Collector Ashish Vachchani.
The boy's parents, who are doctors themselves allegedly made their son perform the surgery so that his feat became a world record. However, the case remained on a shaky ground with the crucial video evidence having reportedly been destroyed.
''They say the tape has been destroyed and we have not seen the video clipping,'' said Ezhilarasi, Deputy Director, Health Services, Trichy.
Dr Murugesan now claims that it was he who performed the surgery while his son just watched it.
''It was I who performed the surgery, my son was allowed only to watch the operation,'' Dr Murugesan said. He added that he had not destroyed the evidence, and that he usually deleted the video recordings after the surgeries.
The Tamil Nadu government has set up a team to probe into the case. The team will also interrogate a local Indian Medical Association member who claimed to have watched the controversial video clipping of the surgery.
Murugesan also denied reports that his son was trying to create a new record by performing the surgery. He said he was only trying to help Dhileepan develop an interest in the profession.
These reactions come as a complete turnaround from what Murugesan had reportedly told the IMA's Trichy's chapter two months back.
The doctor had at that time claimed that it was a world record feat by his son.
