Jaipur: At least 15 people, including four policemen, were injured on Monday when shop owners in a Muslim dominated locality clashed with the civic body's anti-encroachment squad, triggering communal tension as members of two communities hurled stones at each other.
Shop owners in Jaipur's industrial area of Hasanpura fought pitched battles with the Jaipur Municipal Corporation's demolition sqaud accompanied by police which went to the locality to evict illegal construction from either side of the road, police said.
The situation aggravated when a Hindu councillor Rajendra Ahluwalia sat on an indefinite sit-in demanding removal of encroachers who were daily wage earners and some illegal structures at Hatwara road in Hasanpura area, police said.
Members of the minority community pelted stones at the demolition squad and the Hindu community members from the terrace of the shops after which police resorted to lathicharge, burst tear gas shells and fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
The locality had been gripped by communal tension since Sunday night after an incident of stabbing between two youths of the communities, the police said.
Extra-police force including 200 personnel of the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary were deployed to control the situation which was tense since Monday morning, police said adding senior police officials were camping the area.
