New Delhi: A local court in Kanpur has sentenced 15 persons – including a lawyer – to life imprisonment in the 1992 Kanpur riots case.
They were involved in the riots that broke out in the city four days after the Babri Masjid demolition.
Nine people died in the riots including four of a family who were burnt to death.
The verdict was pronounced by Additional District Judge S M Hasim.
Those sentenced to life imprisonment included Pushpendra Yadav, a lawyer, Rajjan alias Rajnarayan, Ratan Lal, Ram Shankar Gupt, Amar Pal, Shreepal, Rajjan Sachan, Dipendra Sachan, Bihari Lal Gupt, Mauni alias Naval Kishore, Krishna Kumar Mishra, Sachit Ram, Jairam, Bablu alias Manoj Tripathi and Prem Narayan.
Booked under sections 147, 148, 149, 436, 395, 397, 307, 149, 302/149 and 201 of the IPC the accused were charged with loot, murder and arson.
Later Yadav’s colleagues created ruckus in the court room to protest the sentence. They used foul language against the judge and disrupted proceedings. Security personnel, however, intervened soon and escorted the ADJ to a safer place.
