Jada Pinkett Smith has opened up about the status of her marriage with Will Smith. In recent interviews, the Girls Trip star disclosed that she has been separated from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum for seven years. Although fans are only finding out about it now, Jada confirmed to Today that she and Will have been apart since 2016.
“I think just not being ready yet, still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership and in regards to how do we present that to people,” Jada told Hoda Kotb in a recent interview. “And we hadn’t figure that out.”
“Why it fractured, that’s a lot of things,” the actress said. “I think by the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.”
Jada revealed that she had considered divorce but she ultimately decided not to file. “I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce,” she said. “We will work through whatever, and I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”
At the 2022 Academy Awards, Smith abruptly took the stage and slapped presenter Chris Rock following a joke he made about Pinkett Smith’s hair loss due to alopecia. In a recent interview with People, Pinkett Smith discussed the incident, admitting that initially, like many others, she believed it was merely a comedic exchange between the two men.
