In the edited caption of the video, Britney explicitly stated that the knives were not real, clarifying that they were props rented from the Hand Prop shop in LA. However, despite this clarification, some of her fans became alarmed and felt compelled to report the situation to the police. In her social media post, Britney also mentioned that she was attempting to emulate one of her favorite performers, Shakira, stating, “I know I spooked everyone with the last post, but these are fake knives that my team rented from a Hand Prop shop in LA. These are not real knives. No one needs to worry or call the police. I’m trying to imitate one of my favorite performers, Shakira … a performance I was inspired by !!! Cheers to us bad girls who aren’t afraid to push boundaries and take risks.”
Captain Dean Worthy of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office informed Page Six that the concern came from someone close to Britney who had viewed the video on social media. He mentioned, “Somebody close to Britney had seen the video posted on social media, where she’s dancing and twirling with knives in her hands, and they were really concerned for her mental well-being.”
Worthy further explained that law enforcement would typically not respond to fan reports about a celebrity unless they believed there was a credible threat. However, in this instance, they verified that the person who reported the video had a personal connection to Britney. The initial call was made through the Los Angeles Police Department’s Systemwide Mental Assessment Response Team (SMART) before it was transferred to the sheriff’s department.
Britney Spears has a history of sharing videos of herself dancing alone in her home on her Instagram feed. This recent wellness check follows an earlier one in January, during which Britney deleted her Instagram page, causing concern among her followers. At that time, she assured her fans that she was “alive and well” and requested privacy.
The knife dance that Britney tried to recreate was from an event pop star Shakira performed at. Shakira was recently awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award and performed a medley of her greatest hits at the MTV Video Music Awards 2023. Her performance included a dance break in which she wielded a pair of knives while dancing to her songs.
