Port Elizabeth: Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has spoken of his pride after seeing his pip Uruguay to a third-place finish at the World Cup.

Joachim Loew's side ran out 3-2 winners following a late header from Sami Khedira in an exciting clash in Port Elizabeth.

It was Thomas Mueller who gave Germany the lead in a move that resulted from Schweinsteiger's long shot.

Edinson Cavani replied for the South Americans, before Diego Forlan turned the tables on the Europeans.

But, Marcell Jansen and Khedira ensured Loew's side prevailed.

"This match was very important for our fans in Germany, which supported us like crazy," he is quoted as saying on L'Equipe.

"Luckily we won, and yet the disappointment of the semi-final was still there. All is not rosy.

"It has been conducted, we came back, it shows the character of this team. I am very proud to play in this team. We must look to the future, we can still achieve a great deal."
