New Delhi: Liverpool have officially confirmed that star striker Fernando Torres has signed a new contract at the club, that will keep him at Anfield for four more years at least, with the deal including an option to extend until 2014.

"Fernando is one of the best strikers in the game today and, at his age, can only get better," Reds manager Rafa Benitez told the club's official website.

"Every major side would want him in their team, but he has shown how much he wants to achieve success at Liverpool by committing his future to the club. He's a special talent, but still has the hunger to improve his game.

"We've made huge progress this season and now we need to take the next step. We are building something special here and securing such important players on long-term deals means we can move forward with confidence.

"This sends out a very positive message to everyone connected with the club."

Torres joins team-mates Dirk Kuyt, Daniel Agger and Steven Gerrard in renewing his deal, and, after Benitez himself secured his future at the club earlier in the season, confirms that the Liverpool are intent on keeping the nucleus of a rapidly improving squad intact.
