Borussia Dortmund's Gio Reyna Signs For Nottingham Forest on Loan

Yet another Dortmund man makes his way to the Premier League, as Nottingham Forest announced the signing of USMNT star Gio Reyna from Borussia Dortmund on loan till the end of the season.

“Born in Sunderland, Reyna arrives at The City Ground having made 121 appearances for Dortmund since joining the Bundesliga club from New York City FC in 2019, winning the German Cup with the Black and Yellows in 2021.

“Gio will wear the number 20 shirt during his time on Trentside,” read a club statement from Nottingham Forest.

Reyna had fallen out of favour with Dortmund manager Edin Terzic, being relegated to a substitute on the bench and barely receiving any playing minutes.

In fact, the 21-year-old had started just twice for the German club this season, and made 11 further appearances as a substitute, after missing the opening month of the current season through injury.

“Gio is a fantastic player. Of course, he’s not happy when he’s not playing,” Terzic said after the match. “You could see that Gio is capable of influencing the game from the bench. He was very confident on the ball, managed to create a few dangerous situations, but was a bit unlucky with his finishing in one or two situations,” stated Terzic recently.

After having been linked to clubs such as Nottingham Forest, Sevilla, Marseille and Fiorentina, it seems as if the American is now headed to the Premier League, in an attempt to reinvent himself.

Reyna’s existing Dortmund deal is until June 2025 and the versatile forward signed with super agent Jorge Mendes in December, shortly before the January transfer window opened.

The Black and Yellows will hope that Reyna can make a big impact at Nottingham Forest, before either returning to Dortmund, or securing a move elsewhere in the summer.

With the Copa America looming this summer for the USMNT, a tournament during which Reyna should be a critical member of the team, what he does during this window will not only have a major impact on his future but also potentially for the national team.

Reyna has made 24 appearances for the USA national team since making his international debut in November 2020, scoring seven goals, and won two CONCACAF Nations League titles with his country in 2020 and 2023.
