Punjab Changes School Timings Amid Severe Winter Conditions
Schools in Punjab have adopted revised timings from 10 am to 3 pm. This adjustment aims to mitigate the impact of severe weather conditions, ensuring the safety of students and staff members

The school holidays in Punjab have remained unchanged despite the harsh winter conditions prevalent in the region. However, authorities have made adjustments to school timings in response to the severe weather. This move, aimed at addressing safety concerns, reflects the government’s proactive approach toward ensuring the well-being of students and staff.

During the period from December 14 to 31, 2023, schools in Punjab were closed due to the extreme cold weather conditions. This closure prompted speculation among students and parents about a possible extension of the winter break. Contrary to expectations, rather than prolonging the holidays, school authorities decided to modify the timings as a pragmatic solution.

Presently, there hasn’t been an official announcement regarding the extension of school holidays in Punjab. Consequently, students are anticipated to resume their regular school schedules following the scheduled winter vacation period.

Responding to the wintry climate’s challenges in Punjab, the government has implemented alterations in school operational hours. As highlighted in recent media reports, effective from January 1, 2024, state schools have adopted revised timings from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This adjustment aims to mitigate the impact of severe weather conditions, ensuring the safety of students and staff members.

Following the reopening of schools, a noticeable decline in student attendance was observed across Punjab. The harsh cold weather and dense fog significantly contributed to the widespread absence among students, emphasising the challenging conditions prevailing in the region.

Recent reports from the PTI have highlighted remarkably low temperatures in various districts of Punjab and neighboring Haryana. According to data released by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), several regions experienced notably chilly weather conditions.

Faridkot district recorded a low temperature of merely 8 degrees Celsius, while Ludhiana observed a similar temperature of 8.2 degrees Celsius. Amritsar experienced a slightly higher but still cold temperature of 9.2 degrees Celsius, along with Chandigarh, the capital city, also seeing a temperature drop to 9.2 degrees Celsius. These measurements underscore a substantial decrease in temperature across these areas, indicating a prolonged period of notably cold weather in Punjab and Haryana.
