Dhananjay Pandey, SHO of Kalyanpur went on to say that the research scholar had moved from a private rented residence to the RA hostel three days ago

A 34-year-old research scholar at IIT Kanpur was found dead in her hostel room by housekeeping staff on Tuesday. According to PTI, the research scholar hung herself from the ceiling fan in her second-floor hostel room. Although the true reason of the death is unknown, the preliminary inquiry appears to suggest suicide.

According to the report, the scholar’s room was knocked on by the cleaning staff, who learned of her death when they got no answer. Police informed PTI that the scholar was hanging from the ceiling when a cleaning staff member peeked inside her room.

Dhananjay Pandey, SHO of Kalyanpur, told PTI that once the police reached the hostel, they broke open the door and carried the body down. Based on a preliminary assessment, depression appears to be the reason for the suicide. He went on to say that the research scholar had moved from a private rented residence to the RA hostel three days ago.

The research scholar joined the IIT Kanpur to carry out her postdoctoral research and originally hails from Cuttack in Odisha. The scholar worked at the IIT Kanpur’s Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering as a postdoctoral researcher. The forensic team’s report is expected shortly, and the police are currently looking into the incident and the cause of the death.

Meanwhile, a 19-year-old student allegedly died by suicide after jumping from a private university’s hostel building. The incident occurred on December 17 at Meerut’s Subharti University’s hostel.
