The internet’s pervasive influence is reshaping global dynamics, with e-commerce emerging as a cornerstone of modern life. From social media engagement to financial transactions and retail, the digital landscape permeates every facet of daily existence. In response to this paradigm shift, India is witnessing a surge in e-commerce adoption, prompting the government to introduce educational initiatives to nurture talent in this burgeoning sector.
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), the country’s largest open university, has stepped forward to address the demand for skilled professionals in e-commerce. In a strategic move, IGNOU has rolled out a free online program tailored for aspiring youth seeking to carve a career path in the e-commerce realm.
This initiative aligns with the nation’s broader objective to leverage digital platforms for economic growth. The e-commerce course, hosted on the SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) portal under the Ministry of Education, aims to equip students with comprehensive knowledge and practical insights essential for success in the dynamic e-commerce landscape.
According to industry reports, India’s e-commerce market is currently valued at approximately $112.93 billion, with projections soaring to an estimated $299.01 billion by 2029. Recognising the vast potential and the impending surge in opportunities within the sector, IGNOU’s e-commerce program is strategically designed to empower aspiring individuals with requisite skills and expertise.
Led by IGNOU Professor Subodh Kesharwani, the 12-week postgraduate-level certificate program spans diverse modules covering fundamental concepts, business models, technological frameworks and contemporary trends shaping the e-commerce ecosystem. Commencing on January 1, the course offers students a comprehensive understanding of e-commerce fundamentals, website development, cybersecurity, e-payment systems and the regulatory landscape governing online transactions.
Enrollment for the program remains open until February 29, with classes slated to conclude on April 30. Subsequently, examinations are scheduled for May 26, providing participants with a structured learning framework to acquire industry-relevant skills and competencies.
