At a time when education has turned into a business, some individuals approach it as a mission. Alok Singh, a teacher from Madhya Pradesh’s Satna, is a prime example of this commitment. Over the past 23 years, he has shaped the future of more than 1,550 students from underprivileged backgrounds by providing free coaching. His dedication is now widely recognised and appreciated.
The story of Singh’s coaching is nothing short of inspirational. Much like depicted in the film ‘Super 30’, Singh has devoted his life to the education of underprivileged children. A Physics lecturer at Government Higher Secondary School in Satna, Singh has been providing free coaching to Class 12 students for over two decades. Initially conducted in the classroom of Ramakrishna College, the coaching programme has since expanded and is now operated within the school itself.
The impact of Alok Singh’s free coaching is so significant that students from various schools flock to attend his classes. The demand is so high that students arrive half an hour early to secure their seats. Between 500 and 600 students gather in a single hall, and despite the sweltering heat, they remain patient and committed to their education.
Numerous students who have benefited from Singh’s free coaching have achieved success in major competitive exams. Many have been selected for prestigious examinations such as MPPSC, IIT, and NDA. Additionally, several students have scored over 90% in their Class 12 board exams. Singh’s dedication has not only transformed the futures of these students but also reinforced the value of education in the community.
Alok Singh was born in Maroha village, Satna, and was appointed as a lecturer in 1992. His son, Aditya, works as a Probationary Officer at South Indian Bank in Bengaluru, while his daughter, Amulya Singh, is studying music in Indore. His life story serves as an inspiration not just for his family but also for society at large.
Alok Singh shared with Local 18 that he is greatly inspired by the senior poet Omshankar Tripathi from Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao who also devoted 23 years of his life teaching children free of cost. Although Singh briefly deviated from this path and started charging fees, soon after he vowed to continue offering free education for as long as he is able to.
Alok Singh’s selfless service has been acknowledged at the administrative level. The district collector and other officials have observed his coaching and praised his dedication. He has also been honoured on several public platforms for his outstanding contributions.
