Days after the QS World University Rankings showed India as the “most represented” country, QS president Nunzio Quacquarelli said that India demonstrated the “highest performance improvement among all G20 nations” in a post on a social media platform following a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to India on global higher education trends.
The founder of QS rankings, Quacquarelli in a post on LinkedIn, a few days ago, said that over the next few weeks, he is going to share some results from the latest rankings, which were brought out based on subjects and were published on April 10, starting with the Indian higher education system.
The QS World University Rankings – by Subject published on April 10 stated that a total of 69 Indian universities made it to the rankings this year with a significant 14% year-on-year improvement on average.
“In terms of research output, India has become one of the world’s most rapidly expanding research centres. From 2017 to 2022, its research output surged by an impressive 54%, making it the world’s fourth-largest producer of research,” he said.
Crediting India’s new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the QS founder, said that the subject-rankings show that the ambitious targets under the NEP are beginning to manifest in the “enhanced performance” of Indian universities.
The QS rankings analysis covered over 1500 universities in 96 countries, 55 academic subjects, and five faculty areas.
India now ranks prominently across in 44 out of the 55 QS subject rankings. “Standout performances were noted in Computer Science, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Physics, and Business Studies, among others,” he said.
India’s Institutes of Eminence (IoE) contributed 47 of 69 Indian university positions within the top 100 in the subject rankings.
Also, across Asia, India now holds the second-highest number of featured universities, behind China, in the rankings, he said.
Quacquarelli congratulated all universities, their administrators, faculty, and students for achieving these “remarkable” results. “The future of Indian higher education is bright, and it is a privilege to watch this transformation unfold”, he added.
This year’s rankings had Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as the top-ranked Indian university at the 20th position globally for Development Studies. It is followed by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM)- Ahmedabad debuting in the 22nd position for Business and Management Studies.
