'Whatever You Feel Like Doing, Just Do It': Jos Buttler's Advice for Harry Brook Ahead Of ODI Captaincy Debut Against Australia
The ODI series between England and Australia ODI series is set to kick off on September 19 at Trent Bridge.

England batter Harry Brook revealed his brief discussion with Jos Buttler before leading the ODI series against Australia. Brook is set to captain the English side at home due to Buttler’s absence as England’s white-ball skipper is currently recovering from a calf injury that he suffered just ahead of The Hundred 2024.

With Brook getting some experience captaining the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred, the middle-order batter will be looking to make an impact in the five-match series against Australia.

Speaking about his role, Brook discussed how Buttler has been given full control of the squad.

“I might pick his [Jos Buttler] brains here and there, but he’s said I’ve got full rein to do whatever I want,” he said in a conference, as per ESPNcricinfo.

Speaking about how he intended to allow his bowling unit to make their own decisions, Harry Brook added, “Whatever you feel like doing, just do it. The only bad outcome is you could get hit for a boundary and the next ball could be a dot ball.”

Harry Brook was characteristically relaxed on the evening of his England captaincy debut at Tret Bridge. He grinned through the pre-match conference while also laughing off the idea that he craved leadership.

Brook also reflected on his underwhelming performances in Test cricket in the summer. The middle-order batter conceded that he did not meet his expectations.

“Because I wasn’t scoring the runs I wanted to, I probably was [feeling] a little bit [tired]. But if I’d have gone out and got two hundreds against Sri Lanka then I’d have been like, ‘I’ll just carry on’. But no, not really,” he said.

Jos Buttler has challenged Harry Brook to identify the moments on the cricket field where he can change the game. The white-ball skipper was absent from the preceding T20I series against Australia. It led to Phil Salt stepping up as captain in the three-match affair. With both sides winning a game each in the first two ODIs, the series was drawn. The third game was washed out due to rain.
