The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) commemorated legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar on the anniversary of his Herculean achievement in Test cricket.
Gavaskar became the first-ever batter in the history of the sport to breach the milestone of 10,000 runs in Test cricket on March 7, 1987. He reached the landmark in his 124th Test as he scored 63 runs in the first innings in a Test against Pakistan in Ahmedabad.

“This is terrific. I want to thank the BCCI for remembering this day. This is a memorable day for me, getting to the 10,000-run mark on the 7th of March. Also apparently, when I came into the commentary box today, Mohan Das Memon told me that this was also the day that I got my first half-century in Test cricket. So, terrific from the BCCI to remember this,” Sunil Gavaskar exclaimed.
“Also on a day that [Ravichandran] Ashwin plays his 100th Test. It’s a special day for Indian cricket, not just for me or Ashwin. I just hope that we end this Test match with another win,” Sunil Gavaskar added.
Sunil Gavaskar made his debut in 1971, on India’s tour of the West Indies. In his debut Test series, the Mumbaikar amassed 774 runs, which is, until today, the record tally registered by any Indian batsman in a Test series in cricket history.
He played 125 Tests, scoring 10,122 runs, which included 45 half-centuries and 34 centuries. At the time of his retirement, he was the only batter to have five-digit figures in Tests and also had the most Test centuries to his name. That record was broken almost 19 years later by another Mumbaikar, a certain someone named Sachin Tendulkar, who scored his 35th Test hundred against Sri Lanka in Delhi.
