'Was Nervous Coming Into This Game', Says Marizanne Kapp After Most Economical Spell in WPL as DC Rout UPW

Delhi Capitals earned their first points of the WPL 2024 season with a thumping 9-wicket win over the UP Warriorz at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Monday.

DC limited UPW to a paltry total of 119 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20-over quota, before successfully chasing down the target with 33 deliveries to spare in a thrashing victory.

The Delhi bowling unit starred on the day as Radha Yadav dismissed four UPW players, namely Grace Harris, Shweta Sherawat, Kiran Navgire and Sophie Ecclestone.

But it was South African seamer Marizanne Kapp who stole the limelight with the most economical figures in WPL with a brilliant showing of 3 wickets while conceding just 5 runs in her 4 overs.

“Was happy when we won the toss, was nice to go out there and bowl,” Kapp said.

The win helped DC, last year’s finalists, open their account for the season following a gut-wrenching final ball defeat at the hands of champions Mumbai Indians in the opening fixture of the ongoing second edition of the women’s T20 franchise league tournament.

“Pleased with the win. Tried to put some training into my bowling, and changed a few things. I am just happy, was nervous coming into this game,” the South African added.

Kapp ran through her quota of 4 overs in a single burst as skipper Meg Lanning tossed her the new ball with absolute confidence and it paid dividends.

“I love bowling with the new ball, that’s the planning with my bowling. Luckily Meg Lanning gave me that 4th successive over,” the 34-year-old concluded.

DC chased down the target without any fuss as the opening pair of Lanninga and Shafali Verma put up an opening stand of 119 runs before the captain lost her wicket with 1 run remaining to pick up the triumph.

Lanning was dismissed after having made 51 runs, while Verma stayed unbeaten at 64 runs. Jemimah Rodrigues came in to put the finishing touches on the game as she swept away a Ecclestone delivery to the boundary to sent the DC unit into celebrations following an emphatic win.
