'Virat Kohli Was Trying Too Much...': Aakash Chopra Explains Why RCB Superstar's Approach Against Jasprit Bumrah Backfired
Aakash Chopra feels Virat Kohli was trying to be too aggressive and paid the price by losing his wicket cheaply to Jasprit Bumrah.

Orange Cap holder Virat Kohli did not have a fruitful outing against Mumbai Indians in an IPL 2024 clash on Thursday night. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru star went back to the dressing room scoring three runs off nine balls.

Jasprit Bumrah’s length ball around the off stump did the job as Kohli attempted to play a counterattacking shot towards the leg side. Kohli ended up producing an edge and MI wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan made no mistake as he dived to his left to complete a terrific catch. Talking about the game, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra said that Kohli’s overaggressive style of playing resulted in his early dismissal against the Hardik Pandya-led side.

“RCB didn’t bat that well after being asked to bat first. We discussed before this match as well that the focus will be on Virat Kohli vs Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah had dismissed him four times before this contest. Virat Kohli was his first IPL wicket,” Chopra said while speaking on his official YouTube channel.

“Here it seemed like Virat Kohli was trying too much because it is in his mind that they score 180-190 but nothing happens with that. So let’s try and aim higher. When you do that, it works against others, but it doesn’t work out against Bumrah. He got an inside edge and Ishan Kishan took an excellent catch behind the wickets,” the cricketer-turned-commentator explained.

Kohli had survived a leg-before appeal on the second ball of the second over bowled by Bumrah but the former RCB skipper ended up being dismissed off the following delivery.

Kohli’s IPL 2024 campaign has been quite impressive though as he is the current highest scorer in the competition. In six matches, he has scored 319 runs at an average of 79.75. His-strike rate has also been a decent 141.77.

Kohli has already scored one century and two half centuries in the season.

Kohli’s brilliance with the bat, RCB have struggled, especially with their bowling.

They’ve won just one of their first six games. With two points to their name, RCB are at the ninth spot in the IPL 2024 standings.
