South Africa beat the West Indies by 40 runs in the second Test played at Providence Stadium in Guyana on Saturday (August 17) to win the two-match series by a margin of 1-0. The Temba Bavuma-led side successfully managed to defend the target of 263 runs by dismissing the hosts for 222 in the second inning on Day 3.
Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada picked up three wickets each for the Proteas, whereas Dane Piedt and Wiaan Mulder accounted for the dismissal of two West Indies batters each.
The win over the West Indies not only helped South Africa seal the series, but it also kept its hopes alive of reaching the World Test Championship final, which is scheduled to take place at Lord’s in June next year.
The win in the 2nd Test helped the Temba Bavuma-led side overtake Pakistan and move to No. 5 position in the World Test Championship 2023-25 points table. They have 38.89 PCT%. Pakistan is now sixth with 36.66 PCT%.
The Shan Masood-led side will, however, have a chance to overtake South Africa next week when they face Bangladesh in the first Test at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
The first Test of the two-match series between Pakistan and Bangladesh is scheduled to start on Wednesday (August 21).
The defeat in the 2nd Test was the West Indies fourth loss in the last five matches, and with 18.52 PCT%, the Men in Maroon are last in the points table. They have only managed to win one out of the nine Tests played so far in the ongoing season.
India is on top
The Rohit Sharma-led Indian team, which will face Bangladesh in a two-match Test series next month, sits in the No. 1 position in the points table. The two-time losing finalists have 68.51 PCT%. If Team India manages to whitewash Bangladesh and New Zealand at home and then avoid a series defeat against Australia later this year, then they will qualify for the third final in a row.
In the WTC points table, India is followed by Australia, which has 62.50 PCT%. 2021 champion New Zealand is in third place with 50.00 PCT%.
