Harbhajan Singh has expressed his fear that India might end up losing against England on the turning tracks as they have an inexperienced batting line-up. The hosts are already 0-1 down in the five-match Test series and will play the second Test on February 2 at Vizag.
The veteran spinner feels that the current Indian team lacks experience as the second highest-run getter in the squad is Ravichandran Ashwin who is a bowling all-rounder and comes in lower middle order to bat.
“The team looks decent, but lacks experience. Yes, there is Rohit Sharma, but the next best run-scorer is Ashwin. In terms of batting, the line-up looks weak. And if they play on a turning track, which I feel they will because they have added Washington Sundar while having Kuldeep Yadav, Ashwin and Axar Patel,” Harbhajan said during his analysis on YouTube.
Meanwhile, India will miss the services of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja in the Vizag which will put them under added pressure to bounce back in the series.
The Indian team has entered the transitional phase in recent times when it comes to red-ball format as several senior players including Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Umesh Yadav have been shown the exit doors.
The current Indian team lacks experience with the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill looking to cement their spots.
Harbhajan pointed out that the batting unit will perform well if they get a good track but a turning pitch might backfire for the hosts.
“I fear India don’t end up losing after making a turning pitch for England. This batting unit is young, they need time, and if they get a good track, they might even perform well,” he added.
Meanwhile, Gill and Iyer failed miserably in the opening Test in Hyderabad as India suffered a 28-run defeat. 24-year-old Gill scored 23 and 0 as he struggled against England spinners. On the other hand, Iyer’s rough patch in red-ball cricket extended as he failed to convert the starts 35 and 13 into big scores.
