'Same Batting Order, Bowling Almost Similar': Ex-India Opener Feels T20 World Cup Won't be Easy for Rohit and Co
India have kept faith on their experienced players for the 2024 T20 World Cup which has gotten underway in the USA.

There were no major surprises in India’s 15-man T20 World Cup squad which was announced last month. Eight of the 15 members from the 2022 T20 World Cup squad managed to find a place in the current set-up too with the selectors keeping their faith in the experienced stars.

The team, led by Rohit Sharma, has been clubbed in Group A alongside hosts USA, Pakistan, Ireland and Canada. The former champions begin their campaign against Ireland on June 5 before facing Pakistan.

India and Pakistan are expected to progress into the Super 8 from Group A. The eight teams in the second round will be divided into two groups of four each.

The top-two teams from each group of the Super 8 stage will advance to the semi-finals.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra doesn’t think that India will have it easy at the T20 World Cup which is being co-hosted by the USA and in the Caribbean.

“Well, it’s not going to be easy for sure because we haven’t played T20 cricket the way it should have been played for the last few editions whether it was the one in Dubai or the one in Australia. We haven’t been up to the mark but somehow we’ve found the same assembly of stars,” Chopra told AB de Villiers on the latter’s YouTube channel.

Chopra though is banking on pitches in West Indies to help India’s cause.

“The batting order still looks the same, the bowling almost looks the same. So it is going to be tough but then I’m expecting the pitches in the West Indies, second part of the tournament at least where the pitches may start holding up a little bit. Big ground, spinners may come into the picture and that is where India might have a slightly bigger advantage to actually do well,” he said.

India played their warm-up match against Bangladesh on Saturday and completed an easy win. Interestingly, Virat Kohli didn’t take part in the contest having arrived a day before to link up with the squad.

It was Sanju Samson who opened the innings alongside Rohit.

Chopra though feels that it will be Kohli who will open for India with captain Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal who is part of the squad will not get a chance.

“I feel your friend biscuit is going to open. He will be opening with Rohit and there will be no place for Yashasvi in the playing XI is what I understand. Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube both will be playing and Dube is almost undroppable in my opinion because he’s the only guy who has been hitting sixes well. Otherwise, it is Hardik or (Ravindra) Jadeja or Axar Patel. You need some muscle towards the latter half of a T20 innings, especially in the West Indies when you are playing the day games,” he said.
