India will face Bangladesh in a two-match Test series, the first match of which is scheduled to take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai from Thursday (September 19) onwards. India, which leads the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table, would like to come up with a big show in the upcoming matches to boost its chances of qualifying for the third WTC final in a row.
Rohit Sharma will lead India in the home series after missing the last Test assignment against Bangladesh in December 2022 due to a finger injury. During the two red-ball matches against the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side, Rohit will have a chance to create a new record and become the Indian batter with the most sixes in Test cricket’s history.
The 37-year-old right-handed batter, who made his Test debut for India against the West Indies in Kolkata on November 6, 2013, has 84 sixes to his name in 59 Tests played so far. If he manages to hit at least eight more sixes in the upcoming two matches, then he will break former Indian opener Virender Sehwag’s record of 91 sixes and take No. 1 position.
The Indian captain already holds the record of hitting most sixes for Men in Blue in ODIs and T20Is.
The overall record of most sixes in Test cricket is in the name of England’s Test captain Ben Stokes, who has smashed 131 sixes in 105 matches played so far. The left-handed batting all-rounder is followed by former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum (107) and former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist (101).
Rohit, who led India to a runners-up finish in the 2023 WTC, will also have a chance to become the fifth leading run scorer in the tournament’s history. As of now, he sits in No. 8 position with 2552 runs in 32 matches, and if he manages to score at least 174 runs, then he will overtake Pakistan’s Babar Azam and go 5th in the leading run scorers list.
Rohit will also become the first captain to score 1000 runs in 2024 if he scores at least 10 runs in the Test series.
