It was a historic moment for the Canadian team as they managed to secure their first win in T20 World Cups with a victory over Ireland in the 2024 edition that took place at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Friday.
Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony after the win, Saad Bin Zafar the Canadian skipper was might pleased with his side. He started off by crediting the batting pair of Nicholas Kirton and Shreyas Movva who put in a solid partnership to help put up a decent score on the board.
He commented, “Very proud moment for the team. The way Kirton and Movva batted, we knew we had a good total to defend”.
The captain was also happy with how the bowlers managed to come together to put up a fine performance as a collective which filled the skipper with a lot of pride.
He added, “We needed a good performance from the bowling unit and I am so proud of my bowlers for putting their hands up and delivering”.
Speaking on the slower nature of the pitch that was on offer, Canada’s gamble to go with the extra spinner paid off in dividends as they picked up three wickets between each other and kept the runs conceded to a minimum.
“The wicket got a bit slow today, so it worked to our advantage. We gambled with an extra spinner and I feel both myself and Junaid bowled really well,” he said.
Speaking on their next game, the captain remains intent on celebrating the win and coming up even stronger in their upcoming games. Canada will be taking on Pakistan in their next game which is set to take place in New York as well.
“One game at a time, we need to enjoy this win and come back strong against Pakistan. We are here to play positive cricket,” he commented.
The skipper also praised the support that was offered by the crowds in New York and hopes that their performances in the tournament can help promote the sport among the younger generations.
He concluded, “It is very important, cricket is growing in our country and hopefully, performances like this can inspire the younger generation to take up the sport”.
