It was the perfect start for the Gujarat Titans wanted in the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League as the new era under the leadership of Shubman Gill started with a win over the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians by six runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Gill’s leadership abilities were certainly put to the test as MI managed to take the game to the final over in the tightly fought contest. But the home side came through as the victors with some fine death-bowling on display by the Gujarat bowlers.
Speaking at the post-match interview, Gill was all praise for his bowling unit for their steely nerves to deliver the win to open their campaign on a positive note. The skipper said, “Definitely a tough game, the way the boys held their nerves to bowl in the death overs was just magnificent especially with the dew coming in”.

The GT captain also revealed that the conditions did not exactly serve them well with dew proving to be a hindrance which his bowlers managed to overcome in the end. Gill added,” Yes there was a bit of dew, despite that, the way our spinners bowled, Rashid Khan and Sai Kishore, made sure that we were in the game always. In the end, it was all about putting on the pressure and holding our nerves”.
Kishore managed to get the big wicket of Rohit Sharma who looked to be in fine touch with the bat. But the Tamil Nadu-based spinner managed to get the Indian skipper before reaching his half-century and turning the tides in the home side’s favour.

GT’s opening batter also gave praise to the quick bowler, Mohit Sharma who picked up the wicket of the set batter, Dewald Brevis before reaching his fifty along with the reputed power-hitter from Australia, Tim David. He said,” Mohit has been a revelation since last year and he is continuing his form and hopefully he will continue to deliver for us for many more matches to come”.
The home side’s captain revealed the plans in the middle as the game went deep. He wanted his bowling unit to keep their cool and build on the pressure and wait for them to make mistakes for his side to capitalise.
Gill also gave special mention to the crowds around the 90,000 mark that turned up at the stadium. He said,” Definitely, the crowd is one thing that has always turned up. Even if it is a day game or a night game and shout-out to all the fans that came to support us”.

Speaking on GT’s batting performance, Gill felt that they had come up short on some runs but also revealed that it had become difficult to strike the ball as it got older. He revealed,” I thought 170 was a good score but we did leave 10-15 runs out there. But that happens, this is cricket. At one point they were also going above par but it was hard to hit the old ball and the wicket was a bit slow, that was the reason we got through in the end”.
The Gujarat Titans will now shift their focus on their next game where they take on the Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk. The Titans will look to exact their revenge after the loss in the previous year’s finale.
