West Indies pace sensation Shamar Joseph was on his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut as Lucknow Super Giants locked horns with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens on Saturday. But his maiden IPL outing turned out to be nightmarish as the Caribbean pace sensation had to bowl 10 balls to finish his first over.
Joseph was assigned to open the Lucknow attack after the visitors posted 161/7 after being asked to bat first. After bowling five legal deliveries, the 24-year-old overstepped and a free hit was awarded to the hosts. Joseph bowled back-to-back wide balls and another no-ball before ending the over with a six. The final delivery, which was a free hit, landed in Phil Salt’s arc who clobbered it over long-off for a maximum.
Phil Salt Stars as KKR Thrash LSG
Given all his success in Australia last year in December, Joseph came into the Lucknow camp as a pace sensation. Unfortunately, his IPL journey kicked off in an unwanted fashion. He ended up leaking 22 runs in the first over after which skipper KL Rahul was seen putting his arm around Joseph’s shoulder and giving a pep talk.

A bizarre record on IPL debut
Joseph equalled Brad Hogg’s 15-year-old record for the sixth most expensive first over bowled in IPL history. Back in 2009, the former KKR leg-spinner conceded 22 runs in the opening over against Rajasthan Royals.
Abu Nechim holds the record for the most expensive opening over for Mumbai Indians, against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, registered in 2011.
KKR win by 8 Wickets
The game slipped away from LSG’s grip right in the first over as the hosts, KKR won by eight wickets. Opener Phil Salt struck a magnificent 89 off 47 balls while captain Shreyas Iyer was also unbeaten on a run-a-ball 38 as KKR chased down the target of 162 with 26 balls to spare.
Earlier, LSG posted 161 for 7 in their 20 overs after being invited to bat. Nicholas Pooran top-scored with a 32-ball 45 while captain KL Rahul contributed 39. For KKR, Mitchell Starc took three wickets while Vaibhav Arora, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy and Andre Russell got one each.
