How Water From Kerala's Siruvani Dam Reaches Coimbatore
The Siruvani Dam was constructed in Coimbatore in 1929. When the states were split based on linguistic differences, Kerala gained ownership of the dam.

While the state of Tamil Nadu shares a water dispute with the state of Karnataka over the release of water from the Cauvery River for its crops, the state’s relation with Kerala over the Siruvani Dam is way more amicable. In the Pallakad district of Kerala, 46 kilometres separate Palakkad town from Siruvani Dam, built across the Siruvani river.

The chief function of the dam is to provide drinking water to the city of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. During the British era, the Siruvani Dam was constructed in Coimbatore in 1929. When the states were split based on linguistic differences, Kerala gained ownership of the dam. Kerala allowed the dam to continue supplying drinking water to Coimbatore after gaining ownership.

Due in significant part to this small body of water, Coimbatore district has grown to become the second-largest metropolis in Tamil Nadu. According to a contract between the governments of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Tamil Nadu receives water from the Siruvani Dam. At the base of the Siruvani, near the Tamil Nadu border, the Public Works Department purifies the water it pulls from the Siruvani dam. A portion of Coimbatore and the surrounding areas are receiving Siruvani water after it has undergone several stages of treatment.

The water pumped from the dam through the pipeline comes through the pipeline for the next 1.5 kilometres. It runs upward for the final 1.5 km to the treatment plant. Every day, the treatment facility processes 7 crore litres of water. Each day, 20 kg of chemical alum fertiliser is utilised. The water is then diluted with chlorine. Following this, the Siruvani dam water is treated at the Rapid Sand Bilderation Center and reaches the people of Coimbatore.
