Mumbai: The markets saw another steep fall on Tuesday on account of heavy selling in scrips across sectors.

The Sensex was down over 400 points. It was the worst closing for Sensex since December 8, 2005.

The Sensex saw an aggregate loss of over 700 points in the first two days of the week. The Nifty lost 110 points.

The BSE Sensex closed at 9,062.65 down 414 points.

The NSE Nifty closed at 2663 down 114 points.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 4,668.10, down 300 points.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 3,844.91, down 259 points.

About 247 shares have advanced, 2052 shares declined, and 46 shares are unchanged.

All the BSE sectoral indices closed in red, down over 4 per cent each.

Capital goods stocks like Carborundum, Thermax, HEG, SKF India and Lakshmi Machine also slipped. The BSE Capital Goods Index ended down 6.63 per cent at 5,898.29.

Metal stocks like Sterlite Ind, JSW Steel, Jindal Steel, Tata Steel and Hind Zinc closed lower. The BSE Metal Index closed at 6,670.34, down 6.45 per cent.

Auto stocks like Tube Investment, Exide Industries, TVS Motor, Hind Motors and Sundram closed low. The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,074.96, down 6.21 per cent.

Technology stocks like Mphasis BFL, Wipro, HCL Tech, Infosys and TCS also plummeted. The BSE IT Index dropped 4.77 per cent to end at 3,193.66.

FMCG stocks like Shaw Wallace, McDowell, Dabur India, ITC, HLL and Tata Tea also ended in red. The BSE FMCG Index closed at 1,608.05, down 4.73 per cent.

The BSE Consumer Durables Index witnessed a of 4.38 per cent to close at 2,475.53 due to Samtel Color, Su-Raj Diamonds, BPL and Whirlpool.

The BSE Bankex also finished lower by 3.99 per cent at 4,079.83 as selling was seen in PNB, HDFC Bank, Canara Bank, Andhra Bank, UTI Bank and Union Bank.

Oil stocks including GAIL, Kochi Refinery, Chennai Petro, HPCL and MRPL also tumbled. The BSE Oil & Gas Index ended at 4,398.87, down 3.98 per cent.

The BSE Healthcare Index also closed down 3.69 per cent at 2,889.35 amid selling in pharma stocks like Orchid Chemical, Ipca Labs, GlaxoSmithKline, Matrix Lab, Pfizer, Glenmark and Lupin.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 5568.63 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 19183.63 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 2691 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 27443.26 crore versus Rs 29091.75 cr on Monday.
