New Delhi: The markets bounced back on broadbased buying. The Sensex and Nifty closed up over 2 per cent. All BSE sectoral indices ended in the green. The BSE Metal, IT & Capital indices gained over 3 per cent each.
The Sensex closed up 212.31 points or 2.30 per cent at 9449.84. It touched an intraday high of 9473.86 and an intraday low of 9271.63.
The Nifty closed up 61.65 points or 2.19 per cent at 2870.85. It touched an intraday high of 2874.75 and an intraday low of 2815.
The CNX Midcap Index closed up 71.50 points or 1.74 per cent at 4185.05. It touched an intraday high of 4187 and an intraday low of 4135.70.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed up 179.42 points or 2.95 per cent at 6255.45. The BSE Midcap Index closed up 101.12 points or 2.22 per cent at 4660.47.
The market breadth was positive; advance/decline ratio was at 9:1. Wipro, Sail, Bharti Tele, Hindalco, BHEL and Tata Motors were the biggest index gainers.
The total market turnover today was at Rs 36,207.42 crore. The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 3,612.9 crore. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 6,550 crore. The NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 26,044.52 crore.
The BSE Metal Index closed up 3.33 per cent at 6666.74 amid gains in Hindustan Zinc, Sail, Hindalco, Nalco, Tata Steel, Welpsun Gujarat, Sesa Goa and JSW Steel.
Technology stocks including Wipro, Patni Computer, Satyam, Infosys, MphasiS BFL, Moser Baer, HCL Tech and TCS also ended higher. The BSE IT Index closed up 3.30 per cent at 3667.80. Wipro gained 7.71 per cent.
Capital goods stock including BHEL, Dredging Corporation, Larsen, Gammon India, Siemens, BEML, ABB and Praj Industries also flared up. The BSE Capital Goods Index closed up 3.08 per cent at 6139.78.
Auto stocks including Asahi India, Tata Motors, Escorts, Ashok Leyland, Cummins, Hindustan Motors, Maruti, Amtek Auto, Hero Honda and Bajaj Auto also moved up. The BSE Auto Index closed up 1.70 per cent at 4280.42.
The BSE FMCG Index closed up 1.42 per cent at 1641.83 due to gains in McDowell, Shaw Wallace, HLL, Colgate, ITC, Tata Tea and Nirma.
Banking stocks like Bank of India, UTI Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI, Allahabad Bank, Union Bank and Oriental Bank also gained. The BSE Bankex closed up 1.14 per cent at 5070.12.
Oil stocks like Petronet LNG, Chennai Petro, Reliance, Kochi Refineries, MRPL, Gail, ONGC and HPCL also surged up. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed up 1.12 per cnet at 4511.74.
Consumer durables stocks Whirlpool, Titan, Blue Star, Mirc Electronic and BPL like also gained. The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed up 0.91 per cent at 3184.90.
Matrix Lab, Pfizer, Lupin, Cipla, FDC, Glenmark, Ranbaxy Labs, GSK Pharma and Aventis Pharma also ended higher. The BSE Healthcare Index closed up 0.88 per cent at 3217.49.
Several sugar stocks also ended higher.
