The market is just a few points away from the 10K mark with both the Nifty and Sensex ending the day at new highs.

Mumbai: The market is just a few numbers away from the 10K mark Nifty and Sensex ended the day at new highs.

The Sensex closed above 9900 and Nifty closed above 3000 for the first time ever. A rally was seen in capital goods, metal and auto stocks.

The Sensex closed up 70.86 points or 0.72 per cent at 9919.89. It touched an intraday high of 9939.55 and an intraday low of 9873.37.

The Nifty closed up 26.60 points or 0.89 per cent at 3001.10. It touched an all-time high of 3004.65.

The CNX Midcap Index closed up 10.55 points or 0.25 per cent at 4308.15. It touched an intraday high of 4317.65 and an intraday low of 4299.10.

The market breadth was negative, about 870 shares advanced, 1578 shares declined, and 55 shares remained unchanged.

Nalco, BHEL, Zee, M&M, VSNL, Tata Motors, Larsen, Hindalco and HDFC Bank were the biggest index gainers.

Gujarat Ambuja Cements, Sail, BPCL and Tata Tea were the biggest index losers.

The total market turnover on Tuesday was at Rs 31,060.61 crore. The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 3,765.58 crore. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 6,548 crore. The NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 20,747.03 crore.

Analysts believe that there is a lot of volatility in the markets, and they would consolidate at 10000–10100 levels till the Budget.

The BSE Capital Goods Index outperformed the other indices. It closed up 2.26 per cent at 6986.87 amid gains in BHEL, Larsen, SKF India, ABB, Dredging Corporation, Siemens, Alstom Projects and Carborundum.

Metal stocks like Nalco, Jindal Saw, Sterlite Industries, Hindalco and Tata Steel also ended in the green. The BSE Metal Index closed up 1.96 per cent at 7131.20.

Auto stocks like TVS Motor, M&M, Tata Motors, Cummins, Asahi India, Escorts, Punjab Tractors, Maruti and MRF also moved up. The BSE Auto Index closed up 1.11 per cent at 4506.53.

Technology stocks like Mphasis BFL, HCL Tech, Wipro, Moser Baer, Infosys and TCS also gained. The BSE IT Index closed up 0.54 per cent at 3749.20.

Buying was also seen in select oil, consumer durables, FMCG and banking stocks. However, select pharma stocks ended lower.
