Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said this is the right time to be in India as the government here offers stable policies and ease of doing business on investments. He also said India gives an integrated ecosystem to the semiconductor industry and will do whatever it takes to become a semiconductor powerhouse. PM Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the three-day Semicon India 2024 at Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh.

The Semicon India 2024 is being organised from September 11 to 13 with the theme ‘Shaping the Semiconductor Future’. The three-day conference will showcase India’s semiconductor strategy and policy which envisions making India a global hub for semiconductors.

Speaking at the inauguration, PM Modi said, “I can say that this is the right time to be in India. You are at the right place at the right time. In the India of the 21st century, the chips are never down. Today’s India makes the world believe that when the chips are down, you can bet on India.”

India will do whatever it takes to become a semiconductor powerhouse, he said adding that this is an era of silicon diplomacy. The country is also targeting a $500-billion size for the electronics sector by the end of the decade from the current $150 billion.

“We are preparing a workforce of 85,000 technicians, engineers and R&D experts. India’s focus is to make its students and professionals semiconductor industry-ready,” PM Modi

Stating that a total investment of over Rs 1.5 lakh crore has been committed for semiconductor manufacturing and many projects are in pipelines, PM Modi said, “Our dream is to have Indian-made chip in every device in the world.”

He also said the country offers a unique proposition of a reformist government, a growing manufacturing base and a tech-oriented market.

Citing global disruption in supply chain during COVID-19 pandemic, he said “Supply chain resilience is critical.”

Speaking on the occasion, Union Electronics & IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision is to democratise access to technology. All the initiatives taken so far whether it is Digital India Mission or the Telecom Mission, every initiative has brought the technology in the hands of citizens. The growth of the semiconductor industry in India will further deepen this vision.”

Vaishnaw added that India first tried to start the semiconductor industry about 60 years ago. This is because semiconductor is a foundational industry. “Chips manufactured are used in medical instruments, mobilephones, laptops, cars, trucks, trains, TVs, and everything other things that is switched on and switched off. After many attempts finally it is under the PM Modi’s leadership that we succeeded in getting the industry in our country.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who was present at the event, “As result of the efforts taken by the Uttar Pradesh government in the past few years, about 50 per cent of the total mobilephone components are produced in the state. UP has emerged as the exporter of consumer electronics. Samsung India has also started its display manufacturing plant in Noida itself. Today, the state has also been established at a hub for data centres.”

Ajit Manocha, president of Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International, said we need to support the vision of achieving exponential growth in the semiconducted industry, which is good not just for India but for the whole world and the humanity. “The semiconductor industry is foundational to every industry in the world… We are on the unprecedented challenges, unprecedented opportunities and unprecedented actions underway in India.”

Industry leaders also participated in the event. The Semicon India 2024 will witness participation of more than 250 exhibitors and 150 speakers.
