The markets ended flat amid volatility on the F&O expiry day on Thursday.

Mumbai: The markets ended flat amid volatility on the F&O expiry day on Thursday. The Sensex settled with a marginal gain of 11.11 points on the Bombay Stock Exchange at 14,228.88 amid volatile trade due to the April 2007 derivative contracts that expired on Thursday.

The Sensex had opened higher at 14,273.17 and touched a high of 14,383.72 and a low of 14,127.18 during intra-day trade.

Meanwhile, the broader 50-stock Nifty Index also gained 10.55 points on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) to close at 4,177.85 from its previous close of 4,167.30 points.

BSE sector indices ended mixed, buying was seen in select capital goods, auto and banking stocks. However, metal, oil and gas and IT ended in red. The midcap and smallcap indices underperformed the frontline indices and ended in the negative terrain.

Top gainers on the indices were Bajaj Auto, Grasim, HPCL, GAIL and TCS. Top losers on the Sensex were ONGC, Tata Steel and Satyam. The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,788.03 down 17 points or 0.3 per cent. The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 7,017.32 down 58 points or 0.8 per cent.

The BSE Bankex was up 0.3 per cent at 7,256.69. IOB, Oriental Bank, Centurion BoP, SBI moved upwards. The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 0.9 per cent at 9,892.23. HEG, Siemens, ABB, L&T, KEC Infrastruct closed higher. The BSE Health Care Index was up 0.4% at 3,847.10. Divis Labs, Cadila Health, Pfizer, Ranbaxy Labs closed higher.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,978.88 up 0.75%. TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, MICO, Tube Investment, Punj Tractors surged. The BSE Metal Index closed at 9,957.65 down 0.6%. Jindal Saw, JindalStainless, Tata Steel, NALCO declined. The BSE IT Index closed flat at 4,958.64.

Hexaware Tech, Moser Baer, HCL Tech, Mphasis slipped. BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 7,300.07 down 0.04%. Reliance Natura, ONGC, Petronet LNG, Reliance ended higher.

The BSE FMCG Index gained 0.3% at 1,842.30. Tata Tea, HLL and P&G closed higher. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 1181 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 55205.6 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4471.27 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 71488.87 crore.

"At the BSE, the market-breadth was weak. Against 1,473 stocks that declined only 1,096 rose and 82 scrips remained unchanged. Losers outpaced gainers by a ratio of 1.34:1. Its turnover was Rs 4465 crore," market analysts said.
