The market rebounded in the late hours of trading. The Sensex closed up 98.19 points or 0.98 per cent at 10,079.30.

New Delhi: The market rebounded in the late hours of trading. The Sensex closed up 98.19 points or 0.98 per cent at 10,079.30. It touched an intraday high of 10,092.85 and an intraday low of 9,896.64.

The Nifty closed up 24.35 points or 0.82 per cent at 3005.85. It touched an intraday high of 3010.65 and an intraday low of 2955.85.

However, the CNX Midcap Index closed down 57.30 points or 1.31 per cent at 4311.55. It touched an intraday high of 4365 and an intraday low of 4277.60.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed down 50.27 points or 0.81 per cent at 6146.01. The BSE Midcap Index closed down 36.18 points or 0.76 per cent at 4718.70.

The market breadth was negative, about 781 shares advanced, 1636 shares declined, and 62 shares remained unchanged. The total market turnover today was at Rs 40,319.14 crore.

Maruti, HLL, Grasim and Dr Reddy's Labs were the biggest index gainers. Zee, MTNL, HDFC Bank, BHEL, and Larsen were the biggest index losers.

Analysts believe that occasional profit booking is taking place in the markets and it will continue till the run-up to the Budget.

The BSE FMCG Index outperformed the other indices. It closed up 1.10 per cent at 1899.95 amid gains in Colgate, HLL, Tata Tea and McDowell.

Oil stocks like ONGC, Reliance, HPCL and IOC also firmed up. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed up 0.86 per cent at 4437.

Technology stocks like Wipro, Satyam, Infosys, TCS and Hexaware Tech also surged up. The BSE IT Index closed up 0.84 per cent at 3675.05.

Buying was also seen in some metal, consumer durables, auto and select pharma stocks.

The BSE Metal Index closed up 0.44 per cent at 6861.57 and the BSE Consumer Durables Index closed up 0.75 per cent at 3198.45. The BSE Auto Index closed up 0.33 per cent at 4827.35 and the BSE Healthcare Index closed up 0.20 per cent at 3549.08.

However, the BSE Capital Goods Index underperformed the other indices. It closed down 1.47 per cent at 6,975.13 amid gains in KEC International, Lakshmi Machine, Larsen, Alfa Laval, BHEL, BEML, SKF India, ABB and Gammon India.

Select banking stocks also ended lower. The BSE Bankex closed down 0.10 per cent at 5,081.69.
