London: Trouble is brewing between Bank of Ireland and its trade unions amid fears that technology jobs American computer giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) had outsourced to the bank could be shifted to India and other countries.

HP is seeking to shed almost 6,000 jobs in Europe as part of a worldwide restructuring scheme.

In 2003, HP signed a contract with the bank to manage its technological needs for a seven-year period. But it is now thinking of shifting some jobs to India, according to a report in Sunday Times.

In an internal document, parts of which were available with the newspaper, the US major has proposed to offshore different jobs.

The document, reportedly leaked to the HP staff, has irked the Irish Bank Officials Association (IBOA) and the trade unions.

They have written to both HP and Bank of Ireland to clarify the plans.

"The IBOA is hugely concerned about the impact this would have on staff who in good faith transferred to HP from Bank of Ireland and now find that their jobs could be outsourced," said general secretary of the union, Larry Broderick.

"This would have serious implications for all future outsourcing arrangements, not just in Bank of Ireland but throughout the industry," he was quoted as saying.
