During the early stages of her career, Preity Zinta took on the challenging role in Kundan Shah’s Kya Kehna, which was considered bold and unconventional at the time. Playing a pregnant teenager who opts to raise the child as a single mother, Preity’s portrayal broke new ground. However, the producer of the film, Kumar Taurani of Tips Films, recently revealed that Saif’s casting was a stroke of luck, as another actor originally chosen for the role backed out on the day of the shoot.
“We knew that he is not going to show up,” he shared with The Music Podcast. He explained that they were all set to start shooting, but they needed an actor. So, they decided to meet with Saif Ali Khan.
Recalling how Saif was brought on board, he added, “So in the evening, we went to Saif’s house, that you listen to the film. He listened to it and said yes. We told him that we will start shooting tomorrow. He said ‘okay, no problem’. We had already done Kachche Dhaage with him and he was very happy,” he shared. Because Saif’s casting was last-minute, there wasn’t any time to get his wardrobe ready. So, they requested Saif to bring his own clothes. “We asked him show us your clothes. We selected his clothes and we told him please bring these clothes and come to the set tomorrow and we started shooting.”
Saif played Preity’s lover in the movie, who leaves her when he finds out she’s pregnant. He says it was the appeal of portraying this rebellious character that convinced him to take on the role. The film, which released in 2000, was touted to be way ahead of its time.
