Ranbir Kapoor Breaks SILENCE On Animal's Toxic Masculinity Accusations: 'If Something Is Wrong...'
Ranbir Kapoor opened up about the toxic masculinity criticism that Animal received after its release.

Ranbir Kapoor opened about the accusations that Animal promoted toxic masculinity. The film, directed by Sandeep Vanga Reddy, featured a number of controversial scenes and opened up the debate of the portrayal of toxic men on screen. Ranbir addressed the criticism during a recent interview with Anubhav Singh Bassi for Netflix India and said he was glad that the movie sparked a discussion on the subject.

“There is a very healthy conversation that has started about toxic masculinity also, which is a great thing because cinema, at least, it starts a conversation. If something is wrong, if you don’t show that it is wrong, and unless conversation starts in the society, we will never realise it,” Ranbir Kapoor said.

Animal revolves around a man and his toxic relationship with his father. The film shows Vijay (played by Ranbir) as an anti-hero who would go to any lengths to protect his father, including gun down 200 people with machine gun. However, despite his efforts, he struggles to get a seal of approval from his emotionally unavailable father (played by Anil Kapoor). Animal has already crossed the Rs 500 crore mark at the Indian box office.

While the debate on the movie continues, Ranbir confirmed that the work on Animal Park (Animal’s sequel) has already begun. “Regarding Animal Park, he (Vanga) has one or two scenes ready, which he narrated to me, and they are very exciting,” Ranbir said.

Earlier this month, Rashmika teased Animal Park in an interview with Pinkvilla. While she was praising Sandeep Vanga Reddy, Rashmika said, “That man just functions differently. I don’t know how he thinks, what he eats or what he does. But with Animal you saw, ‘Oh, this is what the audience like, this is what we like showing the audience, this is the story that we want to maintain’. Now, we have the whole universe. We can play around with whatever we want with Animal Park. So, it’s exciting. And the things that he told me is, of course, it’s too baby of a line. He’s like, ‘Man, I am going to have a blast in Animal Park,’ and he is that man who enjoys making films.”
