The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved Rs 58,000 crore for the development of ring roads around Mumbai. The upcoming projects aim to decongest the city’s traffic, offering a major relief to daily commuters. According to an Indian Express report, the Rs 58,000 crore plan approved by the MMRDA will include a series of roads, bridges and tunnels, spanning over 90 km.

The project will connect the city from all directions, also facilitating access to suburban areas and improving connectivity to the Gujarat border, Konkan and Western Maharashtra.

Presently, the seven proposed outer and inner ring roads are at various stages of planning and tendering. To proceed with the Rs 58,000-crore plan, the MMRDA will collaborate with several development agencies, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

The project is also designed to accommodate the anticipated rise in traffic due to major developments like the Navi Mumbai International Airport and Wadhwan Port.

The initiative aligns with the vision of “Mumbai in Minutes,” which aims to help Mumbaikars travel across the city in not more than 59 minutes, said MMRDA Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee. The new roads will ease out the burden on the present infrastructure of the city.

Speaking to the outlet, Mukherjee also noted that the comprehensive plan features several significant projects, including the Versova-Bandra Sea Link, Versova-Dahisar and Mira Bhayander-Dahisar Link Roads, Alibaug-Virar Multi-Modal Corridor, and the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway, all contributing to the city’s ring road framework.

The network will traverse various landscapes, including seas, creeks, forests, and urban highways, with the help of tunnels and elevated bridges, he added.

Totalling Rs 3 lakh crore from the MMRDA alone, the projects in question are part of a broader infrastructure initiative that will be supported by international agencies, including the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
