Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is set to inaugurate the Kilambakkam bus terminus in Chennai tomorrow, December 30.

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) plans to open the Kilambakkam bus terminus before Pongal 2024. According to CMDA Minister PK Sekarbabu, Stalin will inaugurate the Kilambakkam bus terminus for passengers to use during the Pongal festival on January 15 next year. The Kilambakkam bus terminus has been built to help control traffic in Perungalathur’s GST Road.

As per DT Next, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister will visit the terminus and officially open it to the public at 11 am in a simple ceremony. A trial run with 100 buses was conducted in the terminus two weeks ago, reports state.

During a recent DMK party meeting in Guduvanchery, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Minister TM Anbarasan confirmed that the bus terminus would be inaugurated by CM Stalin on Saturday and that he would visit the entire premise of the terminus in the battery vehicle. On December 25, the CMDA Minister, MSME Minister, and senior officials inspected the bus terminus.

According to The Hindu, after the inspection, CMDA Minister Sekarbabu asserted that construction work and passenger amenities at the bus terminus were completed a few months ago. The inauguration, however, was postponed due to flooding on GST Road and at the bus terminus.

The Kilambakkam bus terminus construction began in 2018 with an estimated cost of Rs 393 crore. Several months ago, all of the terminus’ interior work was completed, and it was scheduled to open in June 2023. It was later postponed due to the terminus’ hasty construction, reports add.

Reports further suggest that there were issues with the buses’ entry and exit. Furthermore, during the recent rains in Chennai, the terminus was flooded. Following that, some modifications to the terminus were made, and new culverts were built in the national highway to prevent flooding.

The terminus’ opening will allow commuters to travel smoothly during the Pongal festival. Sources also reveal that only a few buses will be operated from Kilambakkam at first, with the number gradually increasing.
