Construction has kicked off for underground stations in key spots like Otteri, Pattalam, and Perambur along Corridor 3 of the Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase II project.
This corridor, stretching 45.4 km, is the lengthiest one in the 116-km Phase II plan and aims to ease travel and reduce congestion in Chennai.
Corridor 3 will link various areas from Madhavaram to SIPCOT, passing through densely populated zones like Madhavaram, Purasawalkam, Perambur, Royapettah, Thirumayilai, Mandaiveli, Adyar, Taramani, Perungudi, Thoraipakkam, and Siruseri, as reported by LiveChennai.com.
The start of construction in Corridor 3 is crucial, especially since a section of this stretch (Madhavaram-Taramani) faced delays initially due to tender issues, causing a delay of over a year. However, tunnel work in this stretch is now picking up pace, along with station construction.
Officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) highlighted the challenges and time-consuming nature of building underground stations compared to elevated ones. It involves constructing the diaphragm wall first, followed by various station components like the base slab, roof slab, and concourse slab. In densely populated areas, careful monitoring of vibration levels ensures neighboring buildings’ safety during tunnel and station construction.
A notable feature is the unique design of the Pattalam station within Corridor 3, which is a stacked station with the concourse on the first level, the upper track line on the second level, and the downward track line on the third level.
As construction progresses, the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II project remains a vital infrastructure initiative aimed at transforming the city’s transportation scene and fostering better connectivity.
